Galway Sessions festival to remember giant of Irish trad

EDDIE MOLONEY a traditional Irish musician extraordinaire, considered to be the best traditional flute player of his time and a formidable violinist, will be celebrated at this year's Galway Sessions Festival.

A stellar array of Galway's most outstanding trad musicians, including Frankie and Sean Gavin, members of Shaskeen and the Mulhaire Ceili Band, Joe Burke and Anne Conroy, Carl Hession, Donal Standun, The Fahy Family from Ballinakill and the Moloney family, will perform at the Town Hall Theatre on Saturday June 20 at 8pm to mark the launch of a retrospective collection of music by Moloney (1920-1980 ).

Moloney was born in Ballinakill, Loughrea, and moved to Salthill in 1956 where he lived the rest of his life. He made many solo recordings for radio and TV and for the main folklore field collectors of the time. He played with many famous céili bands, including the Ballinakill in the fifties, the Mulhaire in the sixties, and Shaskeen in the early seventies. He had his own group, The Sea Captains, also in the seventies.

The forthcoming album of Eddie's music collects personal and archival recordings, sourced from the National Folklore Collection, and archives at RTÉ, Radio na Gaeltachta, Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, the Irish Traditional Music Archive, and from the collections of Mick O'Connor and Shaskeen's Tom Cussens. The album was compiled over a five year period by Eddie's son Sean, a renowned flute player.
