Druid Theatre looking forward to welcoming The Duchess of Cornwall

The artistic director of Druid says she is 'thrilled and excited' that the Dutchess of Cornwall has chosen to pay a visit to the world famous theatre company during her trip to Galway.

Following on from a visit to NUIG and Claddagh National School on Tuesday, Camilla will attend the Mick Lally Theatre on Druid Lane for a short preview performance of DruidShakespeare. The historic visit comes just days after the opening of the show, an ambitious production marking the company’s 40th year.

DruidShakespeare tells the story of three of England’s kings – Richard II, Henry IV and Henry V – so there will be royalty both on and off the stage on Druid Lane on Tuesday 19th May.

DruidShakespeare opens on Sunday 17th May and runs until 30th May before touring Ireland and performing as part of Lincoln Center Festival, New York.

Speaking to the Galway Advertiser, Garry Hynes says the impending visit is a huge honour for the company. Ms Hynes was part of the Irish congregation which travelled to Windsor Castle last year with President Michael D Higgins and its is fitting she is being afforded the opportunity to return the hospitality. ''We are so pleased, we were contacted by Clarence House and told Camilla was interested in coming to visit, and it was later confirmed. Druid is an internationally recognised company in the heart of Galway and we are celebrating 40 years this year so this makes it extra special."

It is certainly going to be a busy weekend in The Mick Lally Theatre as staff eagerly prepare for the opening of the new show, along with this very special visit. Ms Hynes says it is wonderful that the production is now going to attract international attention. "This is probably our biggest project to date, it is great to be able to promote it to a global audience. We have been lucky to have many VIP's and dignitaries visit us over the years and we are really looking forward to welcoming Camilla. Any occasion which highlights the west of Ireland and all we have to offer is a wonderful thing."
