Galway ladies aim high against favourites Cork

The Galway ladies footballers will face Cork this Saturday in Parnell Park (3.45pm ) in the Tesco Ladies National Football League division one final.

It is the first time the sides have met in this decider since 2010.

It is Cork's eighth successive division one final and they have been the most consistent team in the country over the past decade. Most people's favourites, Cork are aiming for their third win on the trot.

Galway team manager Kevin Reidy acknowledges Cork’s credentials, but he is also hugely proud of his panel and their ambitions this season.

The Tuam Stars man says his side is not going up to Dublin to make up the numbers.

"We have a terrific group of women and they have worked incredibly hard over the past few months to put themselves in contention to be the best team in the country.

“We respect Cork, but we are going to Dublin to have a right cut off them, and we will be travelling up the road expecting and aiming to be league champions by Saturday evening."

Galway, winners of division two last season, were comprehensive 4-13 to 3-4 winners of their semi-final against Dublin, and they will take confidence and momentum from that performance.

Full-forward Tracey Leonard scored 2-3 in that game and the other goals were from Noelle Connolly and Patricia Gleeson.

Reidy believes the public does not always appreciate his squad’s commitment.

"Our panel is incredibly committed and make huge sacrifices to play county football with Galway. The players work just as hard as their male counterparts, but don't always get the credit and exposure they deserve.

"We are lucky to have an exemplary group of women in this county, and hopefully they will produce a top class performance on Saturday to reflect all the hard work and effort they have put in.

“Some of our ladies have been playing for Galway for almost 10 years and have shown tremendous commitment to the county. They, and the management team, have only one objective this weekend, and that is to produce a top-class team display that will hopefully be good enough to win the league title."

The team was due to be announced last night (Wednesday ) and with no current injuries, few changes are expected from the side that beat Dublin.

The game is live on TG4.
