GMIT open day aims to help students make the right choices

Six thousand CAO applicants still undecided on course preferences

GMIT will hold its last open day of the academic year this Saturday, April 18, for secondary school students, parents, career teachers, and mature students. As some 6,000 CAO applicants have still not registered their course preferences, this event aims to help students make the right choices.

Information will be available on courses in all GMIT campuses including Mayo (Castlebar ), Letterfrack, Mountbellew, and the two Galway city campuses. Students and staff will be on hand to answer questions and provide brochures and information on programmes in business, computing and IT, engineering, furniture design and technology, science, nursing and social studies, tourism and creative arts/media, and outdoor education.

It will include campus tours and activities, learning experience talks, SUSI college finance clinics, career clinics, CAO guidance, a graduate showcase, and a GMIT Students’ Union exhibition.

Dr Carina Ginty, GMIT schools liaison officer, said the open day is an opportunity for those students who have not made up their minds to go and talk to current students about their options.

“It’s always good to speak to someone who has first-hand experience of the course and the college, be they a lecturer, student, or graduate,” Dr Ginty added. “It’s also good to come in and see what the college is like and what facilities and services are offered.

“We are looking forward to meeting prospective students, their parents, and their teachers on Saturday, and we hope what they learn will help them make correct choices before the change of mind deadline on July 1.
