Little Theatre thinks big — from arts to algebra. Are you a Beautiful Mind?

Who needs settling in time when you have an ambitious and open-minded owner? — It has only been open for a little over a month but already The Village Theatre in Carrabane, Athenry is spreading its wings and offering a diverse choice of entertainment options to the people of East Galway. Following two sold out concerts by Sean Keane and a night of sporting memories featuring some of Galway's hurling All-Stars, The Village Theatre will host a free seminar for Leaving Certificate honours maths students this week.

"Beautiful Minds - A seminar on the Leaving Cert Honours Maths Course" is a collaboration between The Village Theatre and The Athenry Maths Academy and will offer a valuable opportunity to fifty lucky maths students across Galway to attend a free seminar on some of the more challenging aspects of the Leaving Cert honours maths course. Owner of The Village Theatre, Ciaran Cannon TD, has outlined why the seminar is taking place.

"We are delighted to collaborate with The Athenry Maths Academy in hosting this seminar in The Village Theatre. We want every community across East Galway to feel that our little theatre is at their disposal for events that bring real benefits to members of their community.

“This wonderful offer of a free maths seminar from Aoife O'Brien, founder of The Athenry Maths Academy, is one such opportunity. There is real creativity required on the part of students who study the Leaving Cert Honours Maths course and a theatre is an entirely appropriate setting for them to express that creativity and learn from a talented maths teacher like Aoife and indeed from each other", said Dep Cannon.

Topics to be covered in the seminar will include algebra, logs, trigonometry and the circle together with exam questions solutions.

Athenry native Aoife O'Brien, who has over 15 years experience teaching mathematics at all levels, founded The Athenry Maths Academy in 2012.

"We work closely with maths students across Co. Galway in gaining a really deep understanding of all elements of the subject. When we heard of the opening of The Village Theatre we thought it would be the perfect venue for a maths seminar in the run up to this year's Leaving Certificate exam. Each of our fifty students on the day will have very comprehensive notes emailed to them before the seminar so that their learning experience will be enhanced.

“This free seminar is our way of giving back to the community we come from and I'm hopeful that our fifty students will find the opportunity very beneficial", said Ms O’Brien.

The Beautiful Minds seminar is limited to 50 places and free tickets are available online on the Facebook pages of The Village Theatre and The Athenry Maths Academy.
