Galway WFC return to Deacy Park in confident form

Galway WFC host their first league fixture in six weeks with the visit of league leaders Wexford Youths in Eamonn Deacy Park on Sunday (4.30pm ).

Galway go into the fixture in confident form, having displayed no ill effects of a five-week break when they produced an excellent 3-1 win over Cork Women’s FC on their return to Continental Tyres WNL action lat weekend.

Galway dominated possession and territory from the beginning at Bishopstown Stadium. Alana Moran shot just wide on six minutess following a Lynsey McKey through ball, and Galway went close on a number of occasions until Ruth Fahy rose to head home a Lisa Casserly corner after half an hour.

Galway continued to press in the second half with the impressive Ellerose O’Flaherty tormenting Cork down the right wing. Méabh De Búrca struck a left-footed shot from the edge of the box on the right which rattled the post.

In the 70th minute Lynsey McKey dispossessed the Cork defence and delightfully chipped the advancing Trish Fennelly in the Cork goal. Galway put the game beyond doubt when both Casserly and O’Flaherty slid in at the back post with Casserly getting the final touch to poke home.

In the dying moments Cork scored a consolation goal from a Maggie Duncliffe 25-yard free kick, giving Louise Creaven no chance in the GWFC goal.

Creaven will be proud of her own performance on a day when the teenage keeper made her Women’s National League debut. Looking solid and confident throughout, she is certainly a name for in the future.
