Public talk on history of Aughrim priory

A public lecture on the history of a little-known foundation in east Galway, the priory of St Catherine in Aughrim, takes place in Galway city next week.

Patrick Larkin, president of the Galway Archaeological and Historical Society, will give an illustrated talk on the priory in Harbour Hotel, Dock Road, on Monday January 12 at 8pm.

The roots of this establishment will be explored, and added to with summaries of the founding fathers, the clerical rules by which they lived, the local families involved, their appearance in the historic records of the time, and what inforrmation is available about their patrons and the ultimate decline of the community residing there.
