GMIT to host themed meal and concert as part of Musical Moments series

GMIT has announced the second classical concert in its Musical Moments series, which will take place at the institute’s College of Tourism & Arts on Monday November 3.

Pianist Billy O’Brien, a final year student at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, will perform a selection of works by Bach, Janácek, Ravel, and Chopin at 7.30pm.

GMIT’s culinary arts students, under award-winning culinary lecturer Frank O’Connor, will present a pre-concert, four-course, dinner in one of the institute’s training restaurants. A limited number of tickets is on sale for this themed evening meal; to book email [email protected].

Pianist Billy O’Brien is studying towards a BA in music performance under Therese Fahy at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. He has performed with Trinity Orchestra in Christchurch Cathedral, and will perform as soloist with the RIAM Symphony Orchestra in the National Concert Hall next May.

Mr O’Brien, a native of Waterford, is a regular prizewinner in the Feis Ceoil and RIAM PianoFest, having reached the final of the Morris Grant bursary last year. He has participated in masterclasses given by distinguished pianists such as Christopher Elton, Pavel Nersessian, Evelyne Brancart, Robert Kulek, Leon McCawley, and Ronan O’Hora.

“This, the second concert in the series, promises to be a very special event as it involves students and lecturers on culinary arts programmes in the College of Tourism & Arts in our Galway campus,” said event co-ordinator and GMIT lecturer Maria Murphy. “We’re delighted to offer this unique cultural experience to the public.”

The concert will take place in Room 903 of the new building at GMIT’s Dublin Road campus. For those who wish to attend the concert, tickets cost €12, €10 for friends and concessions, and €6 for students. Parking is free. The pre-concert dinner begins at 5.30pm. The cost of the food and music event package is €40.

Tickets for the food and music event are limited and are expected to sell out fast, so book early to avoid disappointment. To book your place contact [email protected]. You will then receive a confirmation e-mail and arrangements for payment and ticket collection.
