Claremorris composer Patrick Cassidy nominated for 'Discovery of the Year' award

Claremorris born composer Patrick Cassidy been nominated for the Discovery of the Year Award, in the 14th World Soundtrack Academy programme. This prestigious accolade, which rewards up-and-coming talent, will be announced and presented during the World Soundtrack Awards and Concert on October 20 at the Kuipke Events Centre in Ghent, Belgium.

The World Soundtrack Academy’s objective is to reward and stimulate the growth of young and talented composers by awarding the Discovery of the Year, and Patrick Cassidy’s musical score for John Michael McDonagh’s hit movie Calvary, which is currently on screens across the United States, is nominated for this award along with four other composers.

Set in Easkey, County Sligo, and starring Brendan Gleeson, Chris O’Dowd, Aiden Gillen, Pat Shortt, and Kelly Reilly, Calvary is writer and director McDonagh's latest film following the success of The Guard, which was also filmed in the west of Ireland.

Speaking from his Los Angeles studio, Patrick Cassidy said he was delighted to be in the running for this prestigious title. “I am very pleased that the World Soundtrack Awards has nominated Calvary in the Discovery of the Year Category. Calvary has had great success at the IFTAs earlier this year; let’s hope that the winning streak continues. This is huge for me and my career,” he said.

Patrick Cassidy returns to Ireland early next year to undertake projects with RTE and in his home town of Claremorris.
