Take a dip for GAP

Galway Autism Partnership’s ambassador Phyllis Daly and the Kingfisher Health Clubs have teamed up to organise an opportunity for women to unite and show their support for the local charity by joining in GAP’s latest fundraising event - Up to Our Neck In It. The event, which is due to be held at Ladies Beach in Salthill, will take place on Sunday August 31 with registration commencing at 5pm.

“Part of Galway Autism Partnership’s remit is to raise awareness of Galway’s autism community, the requirement for our services is growing daily,” said Miriam Jennings, chairperson of Galway Autism Partnership. “As a parent of a child with autism, I am delighted to see a high profile business such as The Kingfisher Health Club getting on board and eager to learn about our families and helping to raise awareness of autism. The sponsorship alongside the support from our patron Phyllis Daly will guarantee participants a fun event, while raising funds for the GAP charity.”

GAP provides services to some 80 children and young people on a weekly basis and is expanding to offer adult services over the forthcoming year. The charity, founded three years ago, has raised approximately 50 per cent of the funds required to refurbish its premises in Newcastle. The Up to Our Neck In It event will assist with the building of a centre for autism.

The proposed new centre for autism will also assist with employment opportunities as well as a home for GAP’s clubs and activities. Galway Autism Partnership receives no State funding and relies solely on the generosity of the local community in Galway.

“The fact that we have grown from five members in 2011 to over 450 today is a testament to the absolute need for the organisation, as well as the support that Galwegians have shown.

The journey so far has been truly amazing,” Ms Jennings said.

The GAP team hope that the ladies of Galway will join them for a fun event and an experience, courtesy of Phyllis Daly.

The big splash will commence at 6pm after a beach Zumba West warmup.

There will be prizes on the day for the best swimming costume, sponsored by The Kingfisher Health Club, and the prize is a voucher for the Kingfisher Spa worth €150. The most imaginative swim hat is sponsored by Pia Boutique with the winner receiving a €100 voucher.

Participation is €10 and people can also sponsor a participant if they do not want to get wet.
