Patricia Burke became the third Burke woman to celebrate her wedding day at the Hotel Meyrick when she wed husband Erik do Oliveira Santos recently.

The couple met during the 2012 Volvo Ocean Race in Galway through mutual friends. They “clicked straight away and have never looked back”.

Patricia’s parents Tom Burke and Olive O'Beirne were married in Hotel Meyrick in 1977. The couple were childhood sweethearts, and still are. Their favourite memory of their wedding day at Hotel Meyrick was ''pulling in at the steps and entrance in the Black Princess from O'Flahertys garage and the welcome from the manager. The grandeur of the hotel was amazing.”

But before that wedding Patricia’s grandparents Donie O’Beirne and Una Thornton celebrated their wedding reception (a breakfast reception at the time ) in 1948, in the same hotel, then known as the Railway Hotel.

The couple met in Connemara in 1947 when Una was teaching a summer course and Donie was the district medical officer. Despite growing up only a few miles apart, the pair never met until 1947 and they were married the following year.

“We left by car for our honeymoon in the south of Ireland. It was a lovely sunny day and we got a great send-off with lots of cheering, confetti and ribbons and balloons,” they recall.

As well as having the Hotel Meyrick as the venue, the three generations have had a few other things in common - Patricia’s mother had a lace handkerchief for her ‘something old’ and Patricia had her father’s handkerchief on her own wedding day. Patricia also wore a pair of her mother’s pearl earrings for her ‘something borrowed’, a longstanding tradition, as Olive wore a piece of Una’s jewellery for her own wedding 37 years ago. Olive wore a blue garter for her ‘something blue’, a tradition which Patricia also followed.
