New group to campaign for Oranmore traffic management plan

A new traffic management plan is urgently needed for Oranmore where there is increasing traffic and safety problems, according to the newly-formed Oranmore Traffic Group.

The group, led by Senator Fidelma Healy Eames, is to send its first delegation to meet the new Oranmore Athenry Municipal committee at the Galway County Council chambers on July 15.

The delegation is seeking help from the council to implement immediate measures to alleviate the growing traffic problems in the centre of Oranmore by September. This follows a public meeting which was convened in Oranmore before the Local Elections, which identified traffic and safety problems as well as potential solutions.

Senator Healy Eames said: “As of September 1 this year around 2,000 children and students will congregate in the middle of the village. Added to this the new Aldi store that will open on Castle road. Unless a reliable system is put in place to handle this traffic, no one will be able to get through the village at peak times.

“I am most grateful to Councillor Peter Feeney, the new chair of Oranmore Athenry Municipal Area, for receiving us as its first delegation. He understands the urgency of our traffic situation in Oranmore.

“Traffic and safety issues are affecting young, old, and working people in Oranmore. This is a major challenge that requires the assistance of the newly elected municipal committee.”
