Environmental school to celebrate on Inishbofin

The Conamara Environmental Education and Cultural Centre, based in Letterfrack in North West Conamara, is celebrating its 30th birthday as Ireland’s longest running environmental school.

Established in 1984, the school will be commemorating this milestone on the island of Inishbofin, off the Conamara coast, on the first week of July.

Leo Haillissey, director of the award-winning group, says: ‘‘We bring a multi-disciplined team onto this lovely island. The team includes archaeologists, botanists, marine biologists, geologist, ecologists, musicians, a poet, and a dancer, and over a week we explore all aspects of this exciting island.’’

The team will include marine biologist Dr Dave McGrath, Dr Cillian Roden, ecologists Sinead Keane and Gordon D’arcy, archaeologist Erin Gibbons, geologist Eoin McGrath, botanist Dr Michelene Sheehy Skeffington, and poet laureate for the state of Iowa, Mary Swaner.

The team invites all those interested in the history and music of the island to join them for the celebrations which are open to the public.
