Galway students rewarded for their commitment to healthy eating

Pupils at Cloghan’s Hill National School, Mayo, St Joseph’s Boys’ School, Wexford, and Athenry Boys’ School, Galway, were awarded for their commitment to organic growing and vegatable cultivation.

The winning class won a trip to the Bloom gardening festival, along with €500 worth of gardening equipment.

The schools were awarded first, second, and third places respectively.

This year more than 650 classes took part, growing cress, beetroot, and runner beans.

The schools were taking part in the Grow It Yourself campaign, sponsored by Innocent Smoothies, which encourages primary school students to grow their own food and adopt healthier diets with fruit and vegetables.

The students were awarded their prizes by celebrity chef Donal Skehan at Bloom in Phoenix Park, and were congratulated by President Michael D Higgins.

Skehan remarked: ‘‘It’s so important for children to know where their food comes from and there is a real sense of achievement in growing your own food and using it to create delicious recipes.’’
