Galway city’s new council

Seven new councillors were returned to City Hall in last weekend’s local elections, including three Sinn Féin candidates, the party’s best performance in the city in living memory.

The council has been expanded to 18 seats and below we list the new Galway City Council, the first preference vote of each councillor, their combined total vote, and the best quotes uttered during the count.

Galway City West - six seats. Quota - 1,229

Donal Lyons (Independent )

First preferences 1,872. Elected on the first count.

Catherine Connolly (Independent )

First preferences 1,513. Elected on the first count.

Pearce Flannery (Fine Gael )

First preferences 797. Elected on the seventh count with a combined vote of 1,273.

Niall McNelis (Labour )

First preferences 793. Elected on the seventh count with a combined vote of 1,240.

Cathal Ó Conchúir (Sinn Féin )

First preferences 789. Elected on the seventh count, not having reached the quota, with a combined vote of 1,147.

Peter Keane (Fianna Fáil )

First preferences 904. Elected on the seventh count, not having reached the quota, with a combined vote of 1,102.

Galway City Central - six seats. Quota - 910.

Mike Cubbard (Independent )

First preferences 850. Elected on the third count with a combined vote of 911.

Ollie Crowe (Fianna Fáil )

First preferences 826. Elected on the eighth count with a combined vote of 1,123.

Billy Cameron (Labour )

First preferences 573. Elected on the eighth count with a combined vote of 937.

Frank Fahy (Fine Gael )

First preferences 663. Elected on the ninth count, not having reached the quota, with a combined vote of 797.

Anna Marley (Sinn Féin )

First preferences 503. Elected on the ninth count, not having reached the quota, with a combined vote of 796.

Pádraig Conneely (Fine Gael )

First preferences 542. Elected on the ninth count, not having reached the quota, with a combined vote of 786.
