Tenders sought for €100,000 Blackrock Diving Tower repair works

The iconic Blackrock Diving Tower could soon receive a face lift as Galway City Council is currently seeking tenders for the rehabilitation project which is estimated to cost in the region of €100,000.

Galway City West and Knocknacarra councillor Donal Lyons this week confirmed that an advertisement had been place on the Government E-Tenders website by Galway City Council seeking engineering consultancy services for the delivery of the Blackrock Dive Tower Rehabilitation Works.

Welcoming the move, Cllr Lyons said: “Funding for the repair of the tower is included in this year’s city council budget and I am delighted that the council are now seeking engineering consultancy services for the repairs/rehabilitation to the structure.

“The Blackrock Dive Tower is an important amenity for the Salthill area and is a recognised landmark throughout Ireland. The tower was built by local Salthill building company James Steward and Co to a design by the then Galway Borough engineer Mr B Faherty. It was officially blessed by Fr Hyland, parish priest of Salthill, in May 1954.”

The works will include general requirements, a detailed survey of the existing concrete structure, the drafting of repair/rehabilitations works and tendering documents, and the review and appointment of works contractor. The closing date for the appointment of engineering consultants is May 26.
