Irish students raise awareness of third world crisis

Five Galway primary schools have been selected as regional finalists in the Our Irish Aid Awards 2014. Corandulla National School, St James’ National School Newcastle, St Annin’s National School Roscahill, Scoil Bhriocain Rosmuc, and Northampton National School Kinvara have been chosen from hundreds of national entries, with their projects being showcased at regional finals taking place in Sligo, Dublin, Limerick and Cork.

The Our World Irish Awards were established to increase primary pupils’ understanding of global development issues, like the work of Irish Aid in combating world hunger and promoting universal primary education.

With the theme ‘A Better Future for All the World’s Children’, the Galway students have made posters, songs, project books and surveys about the importance of Irish aid work, with the winning pieces to be presented in Dublin Castle on June 17.

Speaking about the project, Minister for Trade and Development Joe Costello said that it was ‘heartening’ to see young people ‘highlighting the crucial work carried out by Irish Aid, and the scale of the problems in the developing world that we as a nation, and as a global community are facing’.
