Druid to premiere new Tom Murphy play

Brigit, the new play by Tom Murphy, is to receive its world premiere in County Galway later this year, in a staging by Druid Theatre Company.

Bridgit will be one of two world premieres Druid will stage in 2014, with the other being Be Infants in Evil at Galway Arts Festival.

Murphy’s new play is a companion piece to his 1985 classic Bailegangaire, which Druid will also revive this year. Both plays will be toured together, with the first shows taking place on September 23 and 24 during the Clifden Arts Festival. They will then transfer to the Town Hall Theatre, followed by a Dublin run.

Brigit, which will star Jane Brennan and Marie Mullen, traces the lives of the women of Bailegangaire, going back 40 years.

The other premiere from Druid is Be Infants In Evil, the debut work by Brian Martin, as part of the Galway Arts Festival. A playfully comic and uncompromisingly savage ode to modern Ireland, the play is directed by Oonagh Murphy and will star Bailey Hayden, Roxanna NicLiam, Marion O’Dwyer, and Marty Rea.

Young Galway theatre company ThereisBear! has become the first recipient of the inaugural FUEL Residency programme supporting emerging artists in the west. ThereisBear! will receive a six week residency in The Mick Lally Theatre in which to develop and perform a new work.

The Druid Debuts events will see rehearsed readings of Helen and I by Tuam’s Meadhbh McHugh and A Boy Called Ned by Emily Gillmor Murphy.
