An Taibhdhearc wins a prestigious theatre award

AN TAIBHDHEARC’S production of Tom Murphy’s An Tíoránach Drogallach has won The BBC Northern Ireland Irish Language Drama Award.

The announcement was made in Belfast at the 2013 Stewart Parker Awards. The Irish language award went to Macdara Ó Fatharta who translated the play from Murphy’s original script, The Last Days of a Reluctant Tyrant. The play was then staged in An Taibhdhearc and directed by Anne McCabe, artistic director of the theatre.

Ms McCabe said she and Mr Ó Fatharta were “honoured with this award”. She went on to describe Mr Ó Fatharta’s translation as “preserving the sense of the original play and brought a new richness to the text in Irish that sparkled with fluency and poetry.”
