Imelda May - the rockabilly queen returns

IMELDA MAY returns to Galway this summer and for the second year in a row, headlines a concert at the Galway Arts Festival Big Top.

“We had an amazing gig, with a brilliant audience and fantastic atmosphere during Galway Arts Festival last year,” Imelda said this week. “I am really looking forward to returning.”

In the meantime, fans can look forward to Imelda’s third album, Tribal, which will be released on Friday April 25, and the new single ‘It’s Good To Be Alive’.

“I wrote it in the early hours of the morning one day after I had the baby,” Imelda says about the song. “I was sleep-deprived and feeling very exhausted. I looked out of the window, watched the sun rise through the trees and felt, God, it’s good to be alive!”

Although Imelda is best known for her energetic and vivacious rock’n’roll and rockabilly, Tribal will also find the Dubliner infusing a punk element into her sound, and she cites The Clash, Undertones, Buzzcocks, and The Cramps, as among her favourite bands.

“Rocking out is the way I feel,” she said. “That’s why I wanted to inject the rebelliousness of punk into this album. That’s what drives me.”

This ‘Galway Arts Festival and the Róisín Dubh presents...’ show takes place on Friday July 18 at the Festival Big Top, Fisheries Field.
