Galway power nine past Cork

Two Galway WFC players will be involved in international action this week while the national league takes a break.

Meabh De Burca is joining up with the senior women’s national team for the Cyprus Cup, while Lisa Casserly heads to Spain for an u-19 international tournament in La Manga.

Galway WFC, who return to action on March 16 when they visit Shamrock Rovers, go into the break on a high after a superb 9-0 win over visitors Cork WFC in Eamonn Deacy Park on Sunday.

Galway’s firepower was too much for Cork, opening their tally as early as the second minute when Jennifer Byrne headed home. Galway were two up through Sinead Taylor, and she added her second six minutes later when finishing a fine Aoife Walsh cross. Before the breakformer Cork player Lynsey McKey scored from an acute angle.

There was no let-up for bottom-of-the-table Cork. McKey completed her hat-trick, Byrne scored her second, MaebhColeman headed home and Taylor also bagged a hat-trick.
