Dogs and pups looking for new homes at MADRA Dog Adoption Day

A dog adoption day will take place at Trusty Pet Pals dog day care centre in Briarhill Business Park on Saturday, January 25 , from 12 to 4 pm.

The adoption day, organised by local dog charity MADRA, will offer those interested in adopting a dog the opportunity to talk to the MADRA team and to meet some of the dogs and pups that are currently looking for their new homes.

Over the past two months, the charity has been inundated with dogs and pups, and with a slowdown in rehoming experienced during the Christmas period the rescue is packed to capacity and in need of new homes for a variety of dogs of all shapes, sizes and ages.

Speaking about the event, MADRA chairperson Edel Comerford advised members of the public to come to the event with an open-mind as to what type of dog they want.

She said; “We always have people coming to us with a specific breed of dog in mind, but often times this type of dog will not be suitable for their lifestyle. Over the past number of years MADRA has coordinated some very successful pairings, and we really do try to match the right dog with the right owner, so on Saturday when you fill out the adoption questionnaire we will be using this as an opportunity to help us do the matchmaking for you.”

Previous adoption days organised by MADRA have resulted in some very successful matches, and it is hoped that this Saturday will be no different with up to twenty dogs being brought into the city from the Camus-based shelter.

The number of dogs rescued by MADRA in 2013 increased dramatically from the 2012 figures, with an extra 110 dogs coming into its care over the 12 month period.

“Last year we rescued a total of 832 dogs and pups from a variety of sources and situations, with the majority coming from local authority pounds. Of the 832 dogs, 153 of these were purebred dogs which goes against popular belief that all dogs that end up in rescue are cross breeds” said Ms Comerford.

“We also cared for a total of 232 pups; some came to us from the pound, others from the general public, and a number of these pups were born onsite when their pregnant mother was surrendered to us,” she added.

Potential dog owners interested in meeting a specific dog from the Connemara based shelter should contact MADRA in advance as only a selection of the dogs will be there on the day. All dogs will be re-homed with a home check and a donation of €150 is advised in order to help cover the cost of neutering, vaccinating, micro-chipping and caring for the dog at the kennels.

MADRA is a Connemara based dog rescue and adoption group dedicated to finding new homes for dogs of all shapes, sizes, and breeds.
