O’Flaherty calls for ‘no tolerance’ to horse cruelty

The level of cruelty to horses, particularly on the east side of the city, can “no longer be tolerated or accepted” and must be “eradicated once and for all”.

This is the view of Independent city councillor Terry O’Flaherty who has welcomed the proposed allocation of €50,000 in this year’s council budget to deal with animal welfare initiatives and the costs associated with impounding horses.

Cllr O’Flaherty has been concerned by cruelty and mistreatment of horses she has witnessed over recent months and years, such as lack of food, poor care, or inadequate living conditions. She has also alleged that the majority of this mistreatment has occurred on the city’s east side.

However she is also calling for “zero tolerance” towards horses roaming in residential housing estates, parks, green areas, and city council owned lands and properties.

“New and increased levels of enforcement have to be put in place,” she said, “to deal with stray horses and a joint effort by the gardaí and the community wardens is essential.”
