THE BIRTH of Modern Music is the title for this year’s Music for Galway mid-winter festival which runs from Friday January 17 to Sunday 19 at the Town Hall Theatre.

The Birth of Modern Music is put together by its new artistic director, Irish pianist Finghin Collins and will bring audiences to the first stirrings of modern classical music in fin-de-siècle Paris and Berlin, through the works of Debussy, Schoenberg, and Stravinsky, as well as music by Brahms, Fauré, and Vaughan Williams.

The Friday opens with Brahms’ late clarinet sonatas and Debussy’s ‘Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun’; Saturday features Rückert poems set to music by Mahler; Vaughan Williams’ Piano Quintet; and Schoenberg’s ‘Pierrot Lunaire’.

Sunday features Debussy’s ‘Syrinx’ for solo flute; Alban Berg’s Five Pieces for clarinet and piano; works by Rachmaninov; and Stravinsky’s piano duo version of The Rite of Spring.

The performers will be the Cassiopeia Winds, ConTempo Quartet, Rolf Hind, Lenneke Ruiten, Thom Janssen, Richard Uttley, Lore Lixenberg, Caitriona Frost, and Mark Jenkins.

Tickets are available from Music for Galway (091 - 705962, info@musicforgalway.ie); Opus II, High Street; or www.tht.ie See also www.musicforgalway.ie
