Another stern test awaits Galway WFC in Dublin

Galway travel to Dublin to take on second-placed Bus Éireann WNL side Peamount United on Sunday.

Galway WFC manager Nigel Keady is expecting another stern challenge, having faced league leaders last weekend in Deacy Park.

“The girls were gutted not to get something out of Sunday’s game having really challenged Raheny for long periods,” said Keady.

“ Peamount United this Sunday will be another tough test for the team. I hope they will be able to bring the same level of intensity to the game and that we will be able to get a result.”

Having boosted the squad with two recent signings during the transfer window, Galway pushed Raheny all the way, but eventually lost 2 - 1.

Galway native Méabh De Búrca, who returned home from Swedish premier side Eskillstuna United, and young Irish u-17 player Eleanor Stafford, both started in Sunday’s game and made an impression.

De Búrca has more than 60 international caps - 30 of which are at senior level. She has also represented Ireland at the World University Games in 2007 when Ireland finished fourth. A member of the Galway ladies’ side which won the FAI Cup in 2008, she has gained considerable experience in the US for Boston Aztecs, in Norway for Amazon Grimstadand, and most recently in Sweden.

On Sunday the signs had looked ominous for Galway after just five minutes when Raheny took the lead through Ciara Grant. However Galway settled and worked their way into the game.

Still trailing at the break, Galway applied further pressure on the resumption and were duly rewarded with the equaliser through new signing Stafford.

Both sides had chances to take the lead before Siobhan Killen struck home for the visitors. Despite numerous chances for both sides to score again in an exhilarating final quarter, that was the end of the scoring.
