Contract for €1.7 million Westside sports and recreational facilities formally signed

The formal signing of the contract for the €1.7 million Westside sports and recreational facilities is great news for the people of Westside and both St Michael’s and Corrib Rangers Club, according to city councillor Colette Connolly who welcomed the confirmation that Crawfords is the successful bidder.

Both St Michael’s and Corrib Rangers Club have actively campaigned for the upgrading of their facilities following the suspension and major disruption of the Seamus Quirke Road works. The Labour councillor noted how Crawfords has extensive experience in the provision of multifunctional recreational facilities and will be responsible for the maintenance of the two pitches and facilities for a period of one year following completion in order to ensure the condition of the pitches will be of the highest standard.

Cllr Connolly said this week that she hopes the adverse impact for motorists during the construction phase will be properly addressed in the Traffic Management Plan. She said that following her enquiry it was confirmed at a meeting on Monday with city council officials and representative of the clubs that access for construction vehicles would be from the Circular Road side and not from the Bothar Le Cheile. It was also confirmed that the council is actively considering the provision of alternative playing facilities for the clubs.

Concern was also expressed regarding the impact of dogs on the newly constructed pitches. Cllr Connolly says the only way to deal with this is through the provision of Parks Bye-laws, which are due for review next year. However Cllr Connolly said that support from residents was needed if bye-laws in relation to dogs are to be implemented successfully.

Finally, the provision of a new GAA pitch, soccer pitch, a training area, a running track, a new children's playground, adventure play area, exercise equipment as well as new pathways, drainage, entrance improvements, and ducting will enhance recreational facilities for people in the Westside.
