Keeping winter ailments away with acupuncture

As the Christmas holidays approach and as we look forward to gatherings with friends and family, we may neglect our health due to packed social calendars.

During the winter season it is not uncommon for us to experience ailments caused by the drop in temperatures. When the temperature falls, there is an increased incidence of winter ailments such as colds, sore throats, coughs, influenza, chest congestion, dry itchy skin, a runny nose, sinusitis, headache, lethargy, and seasonal allergies. Furthermore, individuals who suffer from conditions such as asthma, rheumatism, and arthritis are also prone to more severe bouts of symptoms. Additionally, the incidence of mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and moodiness also significantly increases with the onset of winter. Less exposure to the sun, shorter days, and holiday stress can all cause these ailments termed seasonal affective disorders.

When seasons change, the body takes time to adjust and adapt to dietary, geographical, or climatic changes. During such changes our immune system is weaker, providing an opportunity for bacterial and viral infections to attack the body.

Chinese medical treatments including acupuncture, acupressure, moxibustion, and herbal remedies can help boost the power of our body’s immune system, helping us conquer winter ailments and effectively improving the quality of our life.
