Handel’s Messiah in St Nicholas’

THE IRISH Baroque Orchestra, the Resurgam choir, and four solo singers will perform Handel’s Messiah in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church.

Messiah tells the story of Christ’s birth, death, and resurrection, through music and song, with the Irish Baroque Orchestra performing on period instruments.

The concert, featuring Sharon Carty (mezzo soprano ), Gyula Nagy (baritone ), Ioanna Pipelea (soprano ), and Thomas Walker (tenor ), and directed by John Butt, takes place at 6.30pm (not 8pm as stated in the Music For Galway brochure ) on Sunday December 8.

Ioana Pipelea is a multiple prize-winner at the 2013 Feis Ceoil, who also qualified for Le Grand Prix de l’Opera International Singing Competition, Bucharest. She will perform the leading role in Janacek’s The Cunning Little Vixen in the annual RIAM production in 2014.

Kildare’s Sharon Carty is a winner of the RTÉ lyric FM Classical Breakthrough Music Bursary. She has performed regularly with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Capella Istrapolitana, Capella Leopoldina, the European Union Chamber Orchestra, and the Wiener Akademie.

Scotland’s Thomas Walker has appeared in concert with the Orchestra of the 18th Century; Freiburg Baroque Orchestra; Al Ayre Espagnol; and the Royal and London Philharmonic Orchestras.

Hungary’s Gyula Nagy sang the role of Don Giovanni in Portugal at the 2012 Zezere Arts Festival. He was also Bonze in Puccini’s Madam Butterfly with Lyric Opera Company, Dublin.
