Druid to stage The Colleen Bawn

DRUID THEATRE will stage Dion Boucicault’s comic melodrama The Colleen Bawn in the Black Box Theatre from December 5 to 21.

A suspense-filled tale of tangled love, misplaced honour, downright skulduggery, and live music will come together in this play which was seen by Britain’s Queen Victoria three times in a fortnight in 1860.

When Hardress Cregan’s (Marty Rea ) family falls on hard times, only his marriage to a wealthy heiress, Anne Chute (Aisling O’Sullivan ), can save it from ruin. But there’s a snag - Hardress is already secretly married to the beautiful, but poor, Eily O’Connor (Kelly McAuley ); and Anne is in love with someone else, Hardress’ best friend Kyrle (Ronan Leahy ). The cast also includes Marie Mullen, Maelíosa Stafford, Rory Nolan, Aaron Monaghan, and John Olohan.

The Colleen Bawn is directed by Garry Hynes, with design by Francis O’Connor, lighting by Ben Ormerod, sound by Gregory Clarke, and music by Sam Jackson. The show will tour to Sligo, Dublin, Belfast, and Limerick in the New Year. See www.druid.ie
