GMIT students union condemns sexist student web pages

Sexist and degrading Facebook pages which encouraged Galway students to comment on the looks, clothes and circumstances of others, have been condemned by the GMIT Students Union.

The SU believes that the pages were specifically targeting GMIT students in an inappropriate manner.

It has called on students to “come out in opposition to these pages” and be more security-conscious online.

“These pages have encouraged other students and the general public to make comments on individual students’ looks, clothes, and their circumstances,” said GMIT SU president Sam O’Neill. “The issue of cyber bullying has once again raised its ugly head here, as these comments could potentially have a seriously negative affect on student’s mental health.”

Mr O’Neill is urging students to “think before they post”; to be “conscious of the privacy settings of their social media pages”; and to report incidents to Facebook where they feel cyber bullying has occurred
