From Norway to Galway

A POTENTIALLY fascinating play awaits theatre goers to An Taibhdhearc on Saturday September 21 at 8pm, when a Norwegian theatre company takes to the stage.

Amor Plays Piano by Meg Skjelmerud, will be performed by Oslo’s Teater Vildenvei.

The play focuses on a Norwegian choir rehearsing for a concert in Prague, along with short film-sequences about the musicians from Prague who accompany them.

Love is the theme of the concert, and throughout choir members discuss different aspects of love: falling in love, first love, a boring marriage, broken love, and how love can bring energy, new experiences, and new directions to life. Another theme of the play is communication and how we understand each other.

Teater Vildenvei comprises professional actors and singers and people with mental health difficulties. It is supported by the Oslo mental health services and the Norwegian equivalent of the Department of Arts and Culture.

Among the awards and commendations Teater Vildenvei have received was a prize for social innovation of 500,000 Norwegian Kroner (€60,000 ) from the Scheibler foundation, which has made the trip to Galway possible.

Meg Skjelmerud is a playwright and an occupational therapist. Theatre Vildenvei actors have contributed with their own ideas and experiences to form the characters in the play, and some of the dialogue is developed through improvisations led by Skjelmerud.
