Cousin’s charity walk begins in Galway next week

A Galwayman is to undertake a charity walk from Galway to Dublin next Tuesday (September 10 ) for his 26-years-old cousin who needs intensive rehabilitation.

Gary Casey (37 ) will set off next week and plans to walk the 130 miles in four days in the hopes of raising funds for his cousin David Cahill.

“ David is in current need of intensive rehabilitation following an incident that occurred in Crete five years ago, that left him in a minimally conscious state,” says Mr Casey.

“ In September 2008, David, who was 21 at the time went on holidays to Crete. On the second day he suffered three major heart attacks. He was diagnosed as being in a minimally conscious state - he has profound brain injury and is blind. After initially being in hospital, he is now in a nursing home, and is looked after by the staff, his mother and father every day of the week.”

Mr Casey says his cousin is improving at a slow and steady pace, but he needs more intensive physiotherapy at the AST Rehabilitation centre in Cork which would cost €30,000 for three months.

“ There is great potential in David. He is a real fighter and is an inspiration to all those around him. The last few years have been extremely hard, but my amazing auntie Kay, uncle Peter and family have kept at it. They have added a purpose-built extension to their house and continue to give David the love and attention they have given him since that morning they got such shocking news almost five years ago.”
