Amnesty to screen film on Roma Gypsies

A People Uncounted, a documentary on the Roma Gypsies is to be screened in the city by Amnesty International Galway this month.

The film will be shown in NUI Galway’s Huston School of Film and Digital Media, across from Galway Cathedral and beside the Fisheries Field, on Friday August 9 at 7pm.

This feature-length film from director Aaron Yeger tells the story of the Roma, who have been both romanticised and vilified in popular culture. They have suffered persecution in Europe over the centuries and were among the victims of the Nazi Holocaust, where an estimated 500,000 were murdered.

A People Uncounted was filmed in 11 countries and features Holocaust survivors, historians, activists and musicians, and highlights Roma life and culture, as well as their struggles.

The film was produced by Marc Swenker and Tom Rasky and edited by Kurt Engfehr (Fahrenheit 911, Bowling for Columbine ).

Admission is free and all are welcome.
