Anti-home tax group to run candidates in city and county

The Campaign Against Home and Water Taxes group will field candidates in the 2014 Local Elections across Galway city and most areas of the county.

CAHWT candidates will stand in each of the city wards - Galway City West, Galway City Central, and Galway City East. The group will also run candidates in a number of the Galway County Council wards.

It is understood that by the middle of next month the group will hold an election selection convention, after which its candidates will become known.

Before then the CAHWT will hold a public meeting this evening at 8pm in the Pillo Hotel, Terryland, which will focus on the building of an electoral force ahead of the 2014 elections, as well as on the continued fight against home, water taxes, and austerity.

“We have travelled the length and breadth of Galway city and county holding meetings and knocking on doors building up an activist and support base that would easily rival anything that the likes of FF, FG or Labour can muster,” said group spokesperson Conor Burke.

Mr Burke said the feedback from the public has been

the “overwhelming dissatisfaction expressed with the political establishment” and frustration over the “ lack of any real alternative.” As a result the party has decided to run candidates in the next Local Elections.

“Currently there is a major political vacuum in Irish society, none of the mainstream parties represent the interests of those on low and middle incomes,” said Mr Burke. “The CAHWT is determined to build a force capable of doing so.”
