Wild about the woods - celebrate our ecosystems

A number of events celebrating National Biodiversity Week will be held in Galway over the next week.

Voluntary group, the Friends of Merlin Woods, has organised a range of workshops and walks which are free to the public to coincide with the national week which highlights the variety of life on Earth essential for sustaining our ecosystems.

Its events begin on Saturday May 18 at 11am when Nuala Madigan from the Irish Peatland Conservation Council will deliver a biodiversity workshop at Ard Family Resource Centre, followed by the launch of the group’s photo exhibition at 3pm in Ballybane Library.

On Sunday the group will be up with the birds for national dawn chorus at 5am in Doughiska Park, while Kate McAney from Vincent Wildlife Trust will lead a bat walk on Monday. The group we will explore the history of the Doughiska Castle, the graves and the Merlin Park Woods with Norbert Sheerin on Wednesday, Sean Purtill will lead a nature walk, exploring the trees and plants within the woods on Thursday May 23.

All events are free and sensible clothing and shoes are advised.
