Galway city’s beaches are in dire need of cleaning as the seaweed left on the shores leads to strong smells and a build up of flies and insects.
This is the view of Labour city councillor Niall McNelis who is calling on the Galway City Council to get Grattan Beach, Salthill, Silver Strand and Ballyloughane beaches “cleaned up as soon as possible”.
“The seaweed, and the grass growing on the sand needs to be removed on a regular basis,” he said. “I realise seaweed comes in and out due to tides but a large amount stays on shore.”
Cllr McNelis added that the bye laws relating to the parking of large commercial vehicles, camper vans, dogs on beaches, and the tackling dog dirt, must be imposed.
“There is no point in having all these bye laws if they are not going to be used,” he said. “Galway is lucky to have these free outdoor facilities but we have to keep them safe and clean for everyone’s enjoyment
