Galway wins at Celtic Media Festival

Galway based production company ROSG and Casla born broadcaster Eibhlín Ní Chonghaile were among the major winners at the recent Celtic Media Festival awards.

Scéal na Gaeilge, produced by Ciarán Ó Cofaigh for ROSG, a Galway based production company, took the award for Best Factual Entertainment.

The two-part documentary series which traces the journey of the Irish language from earliest times to the present day, through animation, green screen, and location filming, was presented and written by Alan Titley and directed by Diarmuid Goggins.

“It’s great to win a prize at a major international festival like this,” said Ciarán Ó Cofaigh. “In my opinion, we’re obliged to find new ways to present documentary programmes in a visual, energetic, and fun way.”

Scéal na Gaeilge also won the Oireachtas Media Award for best TV series and was nominated for an IFTA.

Raidió na Gaeltachta presenter Eibhlín Ní Chonghaile was named Radio Presenter of the Year at the festival.

Eibhlín, who presents Iris Aniar, Mondays to Fridays at 9.10am, is from Casla, Connemara. She worked for Sky News Ireland, Nuacht RTÉ, and Nuacht TG4, before coming to Raidió na Gaeltachta in 2006.

“Eibhlín is an excellent journalist and a talented presenter who can move with ease from a heated political debate to a sensitive personal interview to lighter entertainment stories,” said Edel Ní Chuireáin, the head of RnaG. “I’d like to congratulate her on this award – a fitting recognition of that talent, and well-deserved.”

The Celtic Media Festival is an annual celebration of the best of film, television, radio, and digital media from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany, and the Isle of Man.
