Music making from tree to note

WHAT GOES into the making of an instrument? What are the processes, skills, materials, and equipment necessary to make a violin, a flute, or a guitar?

These are the questions which lie at the heart of an acclaimed new documentary, The Music Makers, which will be shown in An Taibhdhearc this Saturday at 8pm.

In summer 2011 film-maker Myles O’Reilly visited the workshops of four instrument makers, who use traditional methods, to record them at work. The resulting instruments were placed in the hands of four traditional musicians, edited film of the craftsmen was added, and the result is a celebration of music making from tree to note.

The Music Makers features violin maker Graham Wright, bow maker Gary Leahy, mandolin/guitar maker Brian Lofthouse, and uilleann pipe maker John Butler, along with musicians Julie Langan, Finbarr Naughton, Brian Lofthouse and John Butler.

A question and answer session with the instrument makers and performers will follow the screening. The Music Makers is produced by the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar.
