Japanese Film Festival 2013

THE 2013 Japanese Film Festival returns to Galway this month and will be taking place from Sunday April 21 to Wednesday 24. The films will be screened The Eye Cinema, Wellpark.

The films to be screened are: Thermae Romae (April 21 ): In this historical drama, set in ancient Rome, Lucius (Hiroshi Abe ) is an architect in ancient Rome who designs glorious bathing complexes. Lucius takes his job very seriously and is unwilling to compromise his aesthetics for the sake of passing architectural fads, but then a strange thing happens as he experiences time travel and is exposed to new ideas.

Just Pretended To Hear (April 21 ): Sachi is an introverted little girl. Her mother dies unexpectedly and now her only comfort is a necklace with a ring that belonged to her mother. This keepsake helps Sachi to believe that her mother is always near, protecting her.

Rent-a-Cat (April 22 ): Sayoko rents out cats. Her advertising slogan: “Cats for rent! Are you lonely? Why not rent a cat?” However she is lonely herself, but than a young man turns up from Sayoko’s past, follows her home, and all at once her life seems to fall apart.

Wolf Children (April 23 ): This anime film is directed by Mamoru Hosoda, who made the wonderful The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Hana falls in love with a young man who is a werewolf. Their romance brings two children – Ame and Yuki – whose cross-species differences will never be accepted. The family soldier on regardless, even when tragedy strikes, as they try to find a place and way to live freely. .

Ace Attorney (April 24 ): This a big-budget film is based on the popular Nintendo series. Set in a futuristic courtroom, rookie defence lawyer Phoenix Wright is pitted against his childhood friend and ruthless prosecutor Miles Edgeworth in a complex case linked to a 15-year-old mystery.
