Classical and trad concert for Coláiste Iognáid

THE JES Choir and the NUI Galway Medical School Orchestra join forces with Frankie Gavin and Cora and Breda Smyth for a major concert on the university campus.
The concert takes place on Thursday March 21 in The Bailey Allen Hall, Arús na MacLeinn, NUIG, at 8pm. It is both part of Coláiste Iognáid’s 150th anniversary celebrations and a fundraising event for the school.
The full line-up is Cora and Breda Smyth; the NUIG Medical School Orchestra, directed by Carl Hession (new compositions by Carl will also feature on the night); the Choral Scholars of the St Nicholas Schola Cantorum, directed by Mark Duley; The Jes Choir, featuring Leaving Cert students, past pupils, and parents; jazz singer and Jes past pupil Gareth Philips from the Black Magic Big Band; and De Danann’s Frankie Gavin and Michelle Lally.
Cora Smyth has played for Prince Albert of Monaco and at the prestigious Glastonbury festival. She also performed in Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance and Feet of Flames. Breda Smyth plays fiddle and tin whistle and has won many All-Ireland titles, released the solo Basil and Thyme in 2002, and has been acclaimed in Irish Music Magazine.
In September 2012 NUIG and St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church entered into a partnership with the establishment of 20 choral scholarships for promising young NUIG student singers. The scholars form a small chamber choir offering a high level of engagement.
