Art exhibitions

FROM DIFFERENT views of Galway, to Icelandic landscapes, to the work of GMIT students, a host of exhibitions in Galway city and county open, or have just opened, this week.

Galway opens in The Kenny Gallery, Liosbán, tomorrow at 6pm, where artists will give different views on what Galway means to them. Exhibiting artists include:

John Behan, Stef Callaghan, John Coll, Vicki Crowley, Grace Cunningham, Joan Hogan, Éadaín Hunter, Dean Kelly, Bernie Keogh, Fran McCann, Pádraic Reaney, Breege Staunton, Anne Towers, and Marja van Kampen.

The guest speaker will be Galway city arts officer James Harrold. It runs until April 11.

The Sky and Beyond by Galway artist Jim Kavanagh, opens tomorrow in The Niland Gallery, Merchants Road, with cocktails between 6pm and 8pm.

The exhibition includes Kavanagh’s signature skyscapes, new starscapes, and night skies, influenced by a recent trip to Iceland. Proceeds from the exhibition will go to the Galway University Hospitals Arts Trust. It runs until Saturday March 23.

Ballinasloe artist collective, Group 8, launch their fourth annual exhibition of art and writing tomorrow at 7pm in The Regency Room, Hayden’s Hotel, Ballinasloe. The exhibition runs daily up to and including March 18, from 11am to 6pm.

Group 8 is Joyce Little, Grellan Ganly, Úna Spain, Brendan Grealy, John Soden (artists ); Tommy Campbell (sculptor ); Nuala Ní Chonchúir and Zara Little-Campbell (writers ); and Fiona Glynn (textile designer ).

The 126 Gallery on Queen Street is hosting Irish Spring by German artist Claudia Olendrowicz, which explores ideas of hospitality, law, and the capacity to make hidden things visible. It runs until Saturday March 30.

In Anton’s Café, Fr Griffin Road, is an exhibition by Mayo based artist Pamela Gray. Her work covers drawing, painting, printmaking, illustration, and stained glass and mixes figuration and symbolism with a strong emphasis on line.

So What Now?, an exhibition by third year GMIT paint and sculpture students, runs in the Fairgreen Gallery, close to the Radisson Blu Hotel.

Exhibiting artists are Laura Carroll, Rachel Doyle, Peter Sherry, Miriam Callanan, Trish O’Donoghue, Holly Doherty, Lisa O’Donnell, Paul James Kearney, Martin Tyndall, Eoghan Wynne, Jason Dunne, Karen McAndrew, Martin Reid, Katie Osborne, Sara Joyce, Phillip Foley, Jacqueline Burke, Coleman Costello, Seeka Sherlock, Fiona Doyle, and Matgorzata Kamieniecka. Exhibiting sculptors are Brian Berkholst, Rebecca Carmichael, Declan Carroll, Laura Crosse, Emma Cunningham, Fionan Crowe, Conor Frizelle, Liam Higgins, Dimitry Nesterov, Irene Quinn, and Debbie Reilly.

It runs until Wednesday March 20. Opening hours are Mondays to Fridays, 12 noon to 6pm; and Saturday/Sunday, 2pm to 6pm.
