Busy week on the roads for gardai and emergency services

Corrundulla man killed in single vehicle crash

Gardai and the emergency services were kept busy over the past few days attending the scenes of a number of road traffic accidents, one of which resulted in the untimely death of a young Corrundulla man.

On March 5 31-year-old Raymond Forde had been travelling alone in his green Skoda at 2.45am when the accident occurred on a side road between Balrobuck Beg and Balrobuck More, just off the Headford to Galway Road and near the village of Corrandulla.

Mr Forde, from the Cahermorris area, was thrown from his vehicle when it suddenly mounted a ditch. He was pronounced dead at the scene and taken to University Hospital Galway.

The minor road was closed off for forensic collision examination and local diversions were put in place until later that same day. Gardai are currently investigating the matter but it is understood that “speed” had been a factor.

According to reports, Mr Forde was sentenced to five years in jail in February 1999 for causing the death of a 12-year-old girl when he was just 17. Mr Forde had been trying to overtake three cars on a continuous white line when the tragic accident occurred in May 1998.

Meanwhile, a pedestrian was struck down as he took a stroll on the prom in Salthill on Saturday afternoon after a motorcycle and car collided with one another.

The accident occurred when a motorbike collided head-on with a car at 2.35pm causing the motorcyclist to be thrown off. However, the motorbike continued to slid further along and hit a pedestrian. The male pedestrian received minor injuries while the male motorcyclist received more serious injuries, involving broken bones, but not life threatening. Both were taken to University Hospital Galway for treatment - the pedestrian was released later that same day while the motorcyclist remained in hospital until Monday.

A further investigation was launched after a bus struck a 16-year-old pedestrian who had been crossing Eglinton Street on Tuesday at 1.35pm. It is understood the pedestrian was not seriously injured but was taken to University Hospital Galway as a precaution.

Galway gardai are urging anyone with information in relation to any of the traffic accidents to contact them on 091 538000.
