Kavanagh back on hurling training panel

Kinvara's Shane Kavanagh, who was the Galway senior hurling captain when they last won the league in 2010, has been recalled to the extended Galway hurling squad for the coming season.

Kavanagh, who was Galway's regular full-back under John McIntyre's management, was one of the players let go from the panel when the management team of Anthony Cunningham, Tom Helebert and Mattie Kenny took charge.

Kavanagh was considered unlucky by many fans not to have been on last year's panel, but he is now back, along with clubmate Colm Callanan, who is in line to contest for the goalkeeping position with Fergal Flannery for the National Hurling League. Last season’s regular keeper James Skehill will miss most of the league campaign, having undergone surgery on his shoulder injury.

Former regular Aonghus Callanan is also back having returned from a year abroad and the Liam Mellows man will offer management a genuine option up front.

On the football front, there was some media speculation earlier in the week that Kildare's James Kavanagh who left the Kildare panel recently for "personal reasons" could possibly link up with Milltown for the coming season and be a possible transferee to Galway.

However it would appear to be only speculation at this juncture, with very little concrete evidence to support the suggestion.
