Connaughton welcomes funding for extension of local Alzheimer’s project

Dep Paul Connaughton has welcomed the announcement that €150,000 is to be provided in lottery funding for the construction of an extension to the Western Alzheimer’s Home in Athenry.

“The funding for this much-needed facility in Athenry is particularly welcome,” Dep Connaughton said. “In recent months I have met with John Grant of Western Alzheimer’s Association on many occasions with a view to securing funding for this important facility. Without the funding provided today, the future of this planned project was in considerable doubt. Western Alzheimer’s Association is providing tremendous help to families all across the west of Ireland and this funding for the Athenry facility will give much-needed respite facilities to many other families in east Galway in years to come.”

Dep Connaughton also welcomed funding announced for other groups in Galway, including €100,000 is to be provided to CF West, based in Tuam, for a specialised CF respiratory out patients unit and day care centre.

“I also welcome the announcement that €7,705 is to be provided to Glenamaddy Day Care Centre and the fact that Ballinasloe Social Services is to get €40,000 towards the cost of a new bus,” he added. “€600 is also being provided to Tuam Social Sports Club for the purchase of jerseys and medals to allow the club to compete with other similar clubs.

“Lottery funding continues to be a very important element in the funding mix for many voluntary organisations and I commend all involved in the very worthy associations that received funding.”
