NUIG to host public talk on Ireland’s asylum seeker system

A public meeting examining the asylum seeker system, the effects of dispersal, and recent events at Lisbrook House asylum seeker accommodation centre will be held on Wednesday, November 7, at 8pm in the O’Flaherty Theatre, NUI Galway.

Organised by the United Left Alliance the event is a public talk entitled Deportation, Direct Provision, and Dispersal: How cases like Lisbrook show the inhumanity of the asylum system in Ireland.

The public are encouraged to come and listen to speakers from Anti-Deportation Ireland and the Anti-Racism Network as well as residents from Lisbrook House and other accommodation centres around Galway who will outline their experiences.

Joseph Loughnane of the United Left Alliance explains that the “the talk will focus on the harsh measures asylum seekers face in Ireland and how deportation and direct provision severely impact the treatment of such people in this country”. He added that “an insight from people who have to live through these issues everyday” will make the public talk very informative.
