Rathun/An Chaislean Nua retain city league crown

Rathun/An Chaislean Nua retained their Bus Eireann City League title on Sunday morning in Tonabrucky after a well-earned 2-17 to 2-13 win over Castlegar.

The home outfit took a commanding lead with two early goals and a flurry of points in the first half, before Castlegar responded in the second half with some fine scores from play.

They almost turned the tide, but Rathun, with a composed and well-organised performance, held out to retain the title.

Best on the day for Rathun were Brian Kelly, John Hanbury, Andy Keane, Dave Kelly, Willie Mackey, Tom Nally, Niall Carr and captain Enda Feeney, while best for Castlegar were Tom Mannion, Kevin Brady, Ger Farragher, Enda Concannon, Maritin Cullinane and Dean Higgins.

It was a different story in the Minor B Championship when an injury-time point from Mountbellew/Moylough deprived Rathun/Salthill of semi-final spot.

After a strong opening Rathun/Salthill held a commanding lead with five unanswered points and went in at the break with a 1-7 to 0-6 lead.

Aided by elements, however, Mountbellew Moylough pegged back to level scores before Rathun/Salthill grabbed the advantage heading into injury time. However Mountbellew took advantage of a quick puck-out to level and, in the last 30 seconds, they converted a free to win the game 2-14 to 1-16.
