US Democrats and Republicans to hold voter drive in Galway

American citizens in Galway who want to vote in November’s election are encouraged to take part in a voter registration drive which takes place in the city this Saturday.

The West of Ireland Chapter of Democrats Abroad Ireland and Republicans Abroad Ireland will hold a non-partisan voter registration drive from 10am to 3pm on Shop Street, adjacent to the outdoor market at St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church.

A table will be staffed by volunteers who will assist all American citizens in Galway to vote in November’s election.

“There are tens of thousands of people in Ireland who hold US citizenship and are entitled to vote in US elections,” said Larry Donnelly, legal counsel to Democrats Abroad Ireland and a law lecturer at NUI Galway. “It is important for them to know US citizens never lose their right to vote, no matter how long they have been away and no matter where in the world they live and work.

“We are keen to ensure that US citizens studying for the semester or the year at NUI Galway exercise their sacred right to vote in this November’s election.”

Dennis Desmond, chair of Democrats Abroad Ireland, emphasised that Saturday’s drive is “wholly non-partisan” and is there to help any US citizen, “regardless of where they are on the political spectrum”.
