Tuam woman wins National Skills award

Tuam native Laura Callanan received a top award after competing in the finals of the National Skills competition in Dublin last week.

Ms Callanan had competed in the aircraft maintenance category as she is an apprentic aircraft mechanic working for Aer Arann, based in Santry, Dublin. The 23-year-old had originally planned to enter the Air Corp but decided instead on civilian life.

This is the 55th year that the National Skills competition has been held and it is hosted by Dublin Institute of Technology and Snickers Workwear. Apprentices from different parts of the country were tested in 10 different trades including plumbing, bricklaying, and painting and decorating. The apprentices were put through their paces over the course of three days during the intense competition.
