Mouth Cancer Awareness Day 2012

Wednesday September 19 marks the second annual Mouth Cancer Awareness Day. Last year Eyre Square Dental Clinic participated and provided 67 free examinations. There are more than 300 cases of mouth cancer reported in Ireland every year. In Britain, the incidence of mouth cancer has increased faster than any other cancer in the past 25 years.

According to the National Cancer Registry in Ireland, roughly half of all mouth cancers are diagnosed at a late stage. This late diagnosis can result in more complex treatment with a greater impact on quality of life and overall survival. Early detection of mouth cancer greatly improves the chances of survival and Mouth Cancer Awareness Day is designed to help.

Dentists have a key role to play in the early detection and prevention of the disease by identifying those patients who are exposed to risk factors. Visit your dentist regularly even if you wear dentures. This is especially important if you smoke and drink alcohol. When brushing your teeth, look out for any changes in your mouth or neck. Early warning signs include ulcers that do not heal within two weeks, red or white patches in the mouth, or other unusual changes in the mouth or neck. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. A good diet rich in vitamins A, C, and E can help the body to protect itself from most cancers.

The examination is quick and painless and takes less than 10 minutes. Drop in to Eyre Square Dental Clinic on Wednesday September 19 for your free mouth cancer examination, Dr Alastair Woods will be available from 8am to 5pm, call 091 562 932 to schedule your appointment or visit www.mouthcancerawareness.ie
