USI rent book is invaluable for first time students, says Nolan

Labour TD for Galway West Derek Nolan has said that the publication by the Union of Students in Ireland (USI ) of a rent book, will offer students invaluable advice when it comes to renting.

The book is sponsored by the Private Residential Tenancies Board (PRTB ) and it was launched by Labour Senator Aideen Hayden who is the chairperson of the national housing charity Threshold.

“With 50,000 students receiving CAO offers yesterday, this is a very exciting time for the many students who for the first time will be living away from home. Many of these students will be coming to Galway for the first time, studying in NUIG or GMIT.

“With nearly half of those offered places already accepting their places, it is important that students are aware of all the facts before they start renting a property.

“There are a number of things to consider when choosing both landlords and housemates.

“Firstly, is the landlord experienced and are your potential housemates reliable. This is very important as you can be made jointly liable for damage caused or rents unpaid by other tenants.

“The rent book also offers top tips for renting as well as tenants rights in relation to deposits and standards of living and I would encourage all students hoping to rent to read the rent book.”
